About grocery allowances

Some private Medicare Advantage plans give certain members a set amount, often on a prepaid card, to spend on healthy food and produce at approved stores. It is a plan benefit, not a government payment, and Original Medicare has no grocery benefit.

Most plans offer it only to members of Dual Special Needs Plans (people with both Medicare and Medicaid) or to members with qualifying chronic conditions, under the rules for Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI).

What to check before you choose

  • Having a chronic condition does not by itself make you eligible. The plan decides, using its own written criteria.
  • Amounts, approved stores, and whether unused money carries over differ from plan to plan.
  • The money often sits on one card shared with other allowances, such as over-the-counter items. Allowance amounts cannot be combined with other benefit allowances.
  • Ads that promise a grocery card to everyone on Medicare are misleading. Check any offer against the plan's Evidence of Coverage.
