Medicare Advantage Enrollment Tracker

Medicare Advantage Enrollment Tracker

Medicare Advantage enrolled 36.18 million people in September 2026, by the CMS contract file, which includes employer group plans. On the same 53 jurisdictions each month, enrollment grew 2.0% in the year to September. Growth has slowed each year: 6.0% in 2024, 3.6% in 2025 and 2.0% in 2026. Net gains from November to February fell each year: 1,031,963 in 2024, 430,158 in 2025 and 133,240 in 2026.

Data as ofCMS public files, monthly snapshot

  • These totals include employer and union group plans.
    Why this matters

The CMS contract and county files count group plans that retirees get through a former employer. They are not plans you can pick on your own. Counts here are larger than the individual-plan counts on county pages.

  • Alaska and Connecticut drop out of the county file after July 2026.
    Why this matters

Alaska and Connecticut have no rows in the state file this tracker reads after July 2026. The contract file still lists them (September 2026: Alaska 2,273; Connecticut 446,529). This is a hole in one CMS file, not a fall in enrollment. The published national total falls 375,623 in August 2026; that drop is a gap in the source file, not a loss of members. The national line on these pages sums the 53 jurisdictions that report in every month, and those states show "no data after July 2026". Year over year, the panel reads +2.0% and the all-state contract file +2.0%.

  • Some months are missing from the source.
    Why this matters

CMS did not publish every month. Lines break at a missing month instead of guessing a value. A dotted line, where shown, only joins the two sides.

Common questions

How many people are in Medicare Advantage?

The CMS contract file counted 36,183,289 Medicare Advantage members in September 2026. That file includes employer and union group plans. The CMS county file, which this tracker uses for state counts and trends, counted 35,849,071 for the same month, because it has no rows for Alaska and Connecticut.

Is Medicare Advantage still growing?

Yes, but more slowly each year. On the same jurisdictions each month, enrollment grew 2.0% in the year to September, a net gain of 706,934 members. Year to September: 6.0% in 2024, 3.6% in 2025 and 2.0% in 2026.

Did enrollment fall in August?

No. Alaska and Connecticut held 441,430 members in July 2026, the last month in the county file.

Which states lost Medicare Advantage members?

On the individual-plan basis (employer group plans left out), Wyoming (-26.2%), New Hampshire (-13.8%), Idaho (-6.6%), South Dakota (-2.6%) and Minnesota (-2.2%) lost members in the 12 months to September 2026. Vermont: plan ended in many counties, so no percent is shown.

Why not compare January with December?

Counts and shares step each January, when plan-year contracts and annual elections take effect, and CMS posts January counts late. Reported members fell 367,699 from December to January 2026; part of that may be late postings. This tracker compares November with February, or the same month a year apart.
