Data as ofCMS contract file
- These totals include employer and union group plans.
Why this matters
Carrier shares: all Medicare Advantage contracts, including employer group, from the CMS contract file. Share is of members with a carrier label. This file and the state file give different totals, so these shares do not apply to state or county member counts.
- Some months are missing from the source.
Why this matters
Missing months: July 2023 and December 2023 are absent from the state and county file; July 2023 is absent from the contract file. Lines break at a gap. Nothing is filled or averaged across it. Year-over-year changes compare the same calendar month, so July 2023 and December 2023 cannot be compared.
- Some contracts have no carrier name.
Why this matters
Insurer not assigned in CMS data: 0.6% of members in September 2026 (225,918), against 10.7% in January 2023. These are mostly retired contracts with no carrier label. Shares divide by members with a label so old and new months compare. When the unassigned bucket is above 3% in either month, treat share changes as rough.
- Shares jump each January. Compare same months.
Why this matters
Counts and shares step at each January, when plan-year contracts and annual elections take effect. A 12-month change is mostly one January step plus drift. CMS posts January counts late, so compare November with February or March, not January alone.
By Senior Deal Club Standards Desk. Editorial policy. Methodology. Senior Deal Club is not affiliated with Medicare or any government agency. This page is educational. It counts members. It does not rate plans.
Most of the change in both shares came in January 2026. Shares step each January, so read the 12-month change with that in mind.
UnitedHealthcare led 23 areas in September 2026, against about 35 a year earlier. Humana led 13, against 5. An area is a state or DC with data in both months. 15 areas changed leader.
Shares are of members whose contract has a carrier label, from the CMS contract file. The file includes employer group plans. Source: CMS, September 2026.

How concentrated is the market?
UnitedHealthcare and Humana together held about 46% of labelled members in September 2026. That is within a point of September 2025. A standard concentration measure, the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, points to a less concentrated market than a year earlier. The level depends on how carriers are grouped, so this page shows the direction only.
