About grocery allowances
Some private Medicare Advantage plans give certain members a set amount, often on a prepaid card, to spend on healthy food and produce at approved stores. It is a plan benefit, not a government payment, and Original Medicare has no grocery benefit.
Most plans offer it only to members of Dual Special Needs Plans (people with both Medicare and Medicaid) or to members with qualifying chronic conditions, under the rules for Special Supplemental Benefits for the Chronically Ill (SSBCI).
What to check before you choose
- Having a chronic condition does not by itself make you eligible. The plan decides, using its own written criteria.
- Amounts, approved stores, and whether unused money carries over differ from plan to plan.
- The money often sits on one card shared with other allowances, such as over-the-counter items. Allowance amounts cannot be combined with other benefit allowances.
- Ads that promise a grocery card to everyone on Medicare are misleading. Check any offer against the plan's Evidence of Coverage.

Sources and method

Built from the CMS Medicare Advantage landscape, Plan Benefit Package, star rating, and monthly enrollment files. Plan figures are for the 2026 plan year. Enrollment data as of September 2026. Each plan counts once statewide, even when it is sold in many counties. Employer group plans are left out. CMS hides enrollment counts of 10 or fewer, so shares can add up to a little under 100%. Benefit flags follow the plan filings, so a benefit counts whether it is listed on its own or as part of a combined allowance card.
